ALAMO - Ora B. Gillis, retired Alamo postmaster, died at 2 a.m. Wednesday at Culver Hospital after an illness of five months. Mrs. Gillis, 71, was admitted to the hospital on Dec. 2. Her husband, Clifford Gillis, preceded her in death in 1954. The couple were married on Nov. 14, 1916 at Danville, Ill. Mrs. Gillis had resided in the Alamo community ever since her marriage. The deceased retired from the Alamo Post Office in 1959 after 23 years' service. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Civil Employees, and served as secretary of the Montgomery County chapter. Mrs. Gillis was affiliated with Christ United Methodist Church, at Crawfordsville. Born on Feb. 5, 1897, in Somerset, Ky., she was the daughter of Finley Frank and Elizabeth VanHook Cope. She was reared in Montgomery County and graduated from New Market High School. She also was a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College (ISU) at Terre Haute. Survivors include a son, George Gillis of Crawfordsville; two daughters, Mrs. Glen Bever of Darlington and Mrs. Jonathan Ellis of Rt. 3, Crawfordsville; a sister, Mrs. Marie Prickett of Osgood; a brother, Don Aker of Crawfordsville; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Servies-Thomas Funeral Home at Waynetown with Rev. Leland L. Britt in charge. Burial will be in Alamo Cemetery.
